Pharmaceutical Chemicals

Chemicals used in pharmaceutical processing and formulation.

Pharmaceutical chemicals at a glance

Pharmaceutical manufacturing uses inorganic salts, buffers, excipients and purification aids that must meet pharmacopoeial specifications and strict quality-system requirements. The grade — not just the chemical — determines whether a material can be used.

Our pharmaceutical category covers sodium citrate, magnesium sulfate, boric acid, guar gum and activated carbon: chemicals that are produced in pharmacopoeial grades such as USP, Ph. Eur. or BP for pharmaceutical use.

Pharmaceutical buyers should specify the pharmacopoeia and monograph, the documentation required and any supplier-qualification needs. We will confirm what can be supplied for the grade requested.

Using these chemicals in pharmaceutical processing

  • Sodium citrate is used as a buffering agent and as a component of anticoagulant and oral rehydration formulations.
  • Magnesium sulfate is used in pharmaceutical preparations as a source of magnesium.
  • Guar gum acts as a binder, thickener and stabiliser in solid and liquid dosage forms.
  • Activated carbon is used to decolourise and purify intermediates and active ingredients.
  • Boric acid appears in some ophthalmic and topical preparations as a buffer and mild antiseptic, within the concentration limits set by local regulations.

Pharmaceutical FAQ

Can you supply USP or Ph. Eur. grade chemicals?

Pharmacopoeial grades must be requested specifically. Tell us the monograph and edition you need, and we will confirm availability and the documentation provided.

What documentation do pharmaceutical buyers usually need?

Usually a Certificate of Analysis to the monograph and a specification, plus statements such as residual solvents, elemental impurities or TSE/BSE status, depending on the material and your quality system.

Why does the grade matter more than the chemical?

Pharmacopoeial monographs set limits for assay, related substances, microbial quality and elemental impurities that technical grades are not tested against. Two lots of the same chemical can therefore differ in suitability, which is why the grade and its certificate are specified together.

Can technical grades be used in pharmaceutical processing?

Technical grades are not produced to pharmacopoeial requirements. Any use in pharmaceutical manufacturing must follow your qualification process and applicable regulations.
