Textile wet processing moves fibre and fabric through scouring, bleaching, dyeing and finishing, each step with its own chemistry. Leather processing follows a similar sequence of pre-treatment, tanning and fatliquoring. Alkalis, oxidants, salts and surfactants are used throughout.

Consistency matters in textile processing, so buyers usually specify concentration, impurity limits — iron, for example, can catalyse peroxide decomposition — and packaging suited to the dye house.

Choosing textile and leather chemicals

  • Hydrogen peroxide is the most common bleaching agent for cotton; stabilisers and low metal content help prevent uneven bleaching and fibre damage.
  • Caustic soda is used for scouring and mercerising cotton, while soda ash is the usual alkali for fixing reactive dyes.
  • Turkey red oil improves wetting and dye levelling in textiles and is used in leather fatliquoring.
  • Guar gum thickens print pastes to give sharp, even prints.

Which bleaching agent is used for cotton?

Hydrogen peroxide is the most widely used bleaching agent for cotton and its blends, giving stable whiteness without chlorinated by-products. Hypochlorite is still used in some applications.

What strength of turkey red oil should I buy?

It is commonly traded at around 50% and 70% solids or active content. Choose according to your recipe and compare offers on the same test basis.

Why do metal impurities matter in textile chemicals?

Traces of iron and copper catalyse peroxide decomposition, which can cause uneven bleaching and fibre damage, so low-metal grades are preferred for bleaching.
