Construction chemicals at a glance

Construction chemicals improve how concrete, mortar and floors are placed and how they perform in service. Admixtures change water demand, workability and setting time; epoxy resins create chemically resistant floors, coatings and adhesives; and lime and calcium-based materials are used in mortars, plasters and ground improvement.

This category includes concrete admixtures, epoxy resin, hydrated lime, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and calcium carbonate powder, as well as ferrous sulphate, which cement producers use to reduce hexavalent chromium.

Choosing construction chemicals

  • Superplasticisers: polycarboxylate (PCE) admixtures give high water reduction at low dosage and good slump retention; SNF powders remain an established alternative for many ready-mix and precast uses.
  • Cold-weather setting: calcium chloride accelerates the setting of plain concrete, but chloride accelerators are restricted in reinforced and prestressed concrete because of the corrosion risk to steel.
  • Epoxy systems: a standard liquid bisphenol-A resin is combined with a curing agent selected for pot life, cure speed and chemical resistance.
  • Lime: hydrated lime improves the workability and water retention of mortars and is used to stabilise clay soils.

Which concrete admixture type do I need?

Start from the performance target — water reduction, slump retention, set retardation or acceleration — and the standard your project follows, such as ASTM C494 or EN 934-2. Share your mix design and we will suggest suitable admixture types.

Can calcium chloride be used in reinforced concrete?

Chloride-based accelerators increase the risk of reinforcement corrosion, so most concrete codes restrict or prohibit them in reinforced and prestressed concrete. Check the chloride limits in your applicable standard.

Is epoxy resin supplied with a hardener?

Epoxy resin cures with a separate curing agent. Tell us the application — flooring, coating, adhesive or grout — and the cure conditions so a suitable resin and hardener combination can be discussed.
