Cleaning and disinfection products are built from a relatively small set of active chemicals: chlorine-based and peroxygen oxidisers that kill microorganisms, alkalis that remove fats and proteins, acids that dissolve scale, and builders that improve detergent performance.

Choosing cleaning and disinfection chemicals

Hypochlorites are fast-acting and economical chlorine disinfectants; they must never be mixed with acids.
Hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid are peroxygen disinfectants that break down to water, oxygen and acetic acid.
Caustic soda is the main alkali in heavy-duty and clean-in-place cleaners; soda ash is milder and used in laundry and general-purpose cleaning.
Hydrochloric acid removes limescale and rust but is corrosive to many metals.

Cleaning & Disinfection FAQ

Can hypochlorite and acid cleaners be used together?

No. Mixing hypochlorite with acids releases toxic chlorine gas. Store and use them separately and follow the Safety Data Sheets.

Which disinfectant leaves the fewest residues?

Peroxygen products such as hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid decompose to water, oxygen and acetic acid, which is why they are popular for food-contact and environmental disinfection.

Do disinfectant products need registration?

In many markets disinfectant formulations and their claims must be registered or notified before sale. Requirements depend on the country and the intended use.
